How to improve your credit rating

3. How to get your credit report

By now you are probably wondering how you can get your credit report. Well, there are three credit reference agencies in the UK: Experian, Equifax and CallCredit. They will supply you with your credit report if you send them a cheque for £2 in the post with a letter stating your intentions and your name and address.

Each agency may hold different information so if you may need to contact more than one to get the required information. Each agency you contact will need to be paid a £2 fee.

However, they will not be able to provide you with your credit score when you pay them the £2. Every credit assigning company has their own formula for calculating your credit score.

If you are a member of Experian, and you pay them a small fee, they will use their own formula to work out your ‘national credit score’. This can be used as a good guide on how your credit report will affect your chances of getting further credit.

You can subscribe to Experian, and enjoy a 30 day free trial with them when you join, by going to the Experian CreditExpert page.

So, now that you know a bit about what a credit report is, next are some tips on how to improve it and maintain it to a high standard.
