9.7 Late and returned payment fees for credit cards

If you pay your credit card bill after the payment due date, you will be charged a penalty fee by the credit card company. The maximum the credit card company can charge you for paying your bill late on each separate occasion is £12.

Similarly, if the credit card company go to take a cheque or Direct Debit payment from your bank account and there are insufficient funds to cover the payment, it will charge you a £12 penalty fee for the ‘returned payment’.

The best way to avoid these charges is to make sure you pay your credit card bill on time and ensure that you have sufficient funds in your bank account to cover the Direct Debit or cheque amount around the payment due date.
