Zurich extends critical illness cover
19 August 2009 16:21:02
Six conditions have been added to Zurich's critical illness insurance.
Insurance provider Zurich has expanded the number of conditions covered by two of its critical illness policies.
A total of six new conditions have been added, taking the total included in the plans to 38.
They are cardiomyopathy, encephalitis, pulmonary artery surgery, open heart surgery, severe lung disease or respiratory failure and systemic lupus erythematosus.
Following a review of its critical illness proposition, the company has also decided to reduce guaranteed critical illness premiums where an exclusion is applied for cancer or multiple sclerosis.
The changes will apply to Zurich's Level Protection and Decreasing Mortgage plans with immediate effect.
Zurich protection management director Peter Hamilton said the company had opted against including conditions such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis because their current definitions are "restrictive" and would result in "very few" claims being paid out.
"We keep out proposition under regular review and these changes reinforce our commitment to the market," he commented.
Zurich was founded in 1872 and currently serves around 60,000 insurance customers in over 170 countries.
At the end of last month, the company announced the appointment of Stephen Lewis as its chief executive officer for general insurance in the UK.
