Young drivers 'twice as likely to crash'

Young drivers are most likely to submit car insurance claims.
Britain's youngest drivers are twice as likely to crash as the average motorist, a study by Admiral Car Insurance has found.
The insurer looked at data on 2 million of its policyholders and found that 6.5% had reported an accident over a one-year period.
The figure was much higher for 17-year-olds (13.2%) and 18-year-olds (12.8%), while just 2% of over-50s had crashed their car during that time.
Admiral's report also revealed that young people were five times more likely to be injured and tended to submit more expensive claims.
For instance, while the average claim during the study period was for £1,741, crashes involving young drivers between the ages of 17 and 18 typically cost almost £3,500 each.
Sue Longthorn, managing director at Admiral, commented: "From our point of view, driving experience makes a huge difference and is the main reason older motorists have lower premiums.
"It isn't until motorists reach 25 that their accident statistics improve substantially, but it really is the youngest ones who are the biggest risk."
Research by road safety charity Brake shows that one in eight licence holders is under the age of 25, yet the age group accounts for one in three drivers who die on Britain's roads.
