Women are increasingly using their savings accounts.
A growing number of women are trying to bolster the contents of their savings accounts, new research suggests.

Legal & General's latest MoneyMood Survey suggests that 64% of women are now in the mood to compare savings accounts and set money aside, compared to just 59% at the beginning of 2009.

In contrast, the percentage of men who are saving has fallen from 59% to 56% during the same period.

The survey suggests that many women are keen to save for a rainy day (66%), a holiday (51%), to pay household bills (51%) and to enable home improvements (48%).

In contrast, just 25% of women are building up a spare supply of cash in case they lose their job and only 10% are saving up for a house deposit.

Mark Gregory, executive director of savings at Legal & General, said: "The mood of the nation is definitely one of saving (60%) rather than spending (23%). But there is a marked difference in the responses from the sexes.

"Women are clearly the driving force in maintaining the saving habit in most households."

Meanwhile, a separate survey by Aviva has found that one in four over-55s have been forced to dip into their savings to meet unexpected expenses, while only 23% have made any provision for the future upkeep of their homes. ADNFCR-2196-ID-800057045-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
