The number of hotspot venues is increasing rapidly.
There has been "phenomenal" growth in the Wi-Fi hotspot market in recent years, according to new research by market intelligence firm In-Stat.

The company found that wireless and broadband providers have embraced the concept of Wi-Fi and that this has fuelled the increase in hotspots.

In-Stat believes there will be more than 1m hotspot venues around the world by the end of 2013, with nearly 120bn connections made to these networks in 2015.

Amy Cravens, the company's senior analyst, said that the hotspot market is undergoing significant changes in usage and is in a "continuous state of flux".

She revealed: "Wi-Fi hotspots have become a service used to attract customers to other product offerings, rather than a standalone offering.

"Whether the product is broadband, mobile service or a cup of coffee, Wi-Fi is being layered on top of core offerings as a competitive differentiator."

According to the report, the majority of connections made via hotspots involve people with notebook computers.

However, the rate of access via smartphones and tablet computers is increasing rapidly.

While the majority of internet users choose to compare broadband deals and purchase a home connection, hotspots are useful for those without a connection at home, as well as for those who want the added convenience of being able to use the internet while they are out and about.ADNFCR-2196-ID-800722104-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
