Whippets are particularly expensive pets.
Animal lovers who are looking for a dog that won't cost them the earth may want to avoid picking a Whippet, new research suggests.
A study by Esure Pet Insurance found the breed to be the most expensive over the course of its lifetime, costing the average owner about £66,236 in total.
On an annual basis, Whippet owners can expect to fork out £4,632 on food, vet bills, kennel visits, grooming, treats and pet insurance offers.
In contrast, the average Jack Russell costs its owner just £1,517 per year.
While all prospective dog owners should be aware of the high costs associated with pet ownership, Esure's research suggests that an individual's choice of breed can greatly affect their overall outlay.
However, owners can also reduce their financial risk by comparing pet insurance offers before bringing their new friend home.
Esure found that one-third of dog owners were surprised by the overall cost of ownership, yet 38% had failed to purchase pet insurance.
Head of pet insurance Nikki Sellers commented: "Despite the amount of money dog lovers spend on their breeds, many pets remain uninsured.
"Vets' fees can be very expensive and owners should bear in mind that, ultimately, their pet's health is more important than the latest dog accessories or expensive treats."
Susan Arts, vice-president of marketing for US pet insurance firm 24PetWatch Insurance, recently said that pet insurance is vital for mitigating the risk of future veterinary costs.
