Couples must be cautious when buying presents with credit cards.
Couples should ensure they are switched on to the threat posed by
credit card fraudsters if they intend to purchase Valentine's Day gifts online, the Independent has reported.
According to new research by fraud prevention group Retail Decisions, the value of fraudulent online debit and credit card transactions could hit £33m in the run-up to February 14th.
In addition, the study found that credit card conmen will aim to splash out almost £350 each on gifts at their victims' expense, with the average Briton spending a more conservative £154.
"Villainous wooers [will] flash the cash to impress with perfume, flowers and champagne," noted the newspaper.
Although many couples will decide to head abroad to spend their special day together, Retail Decisions warned that the possibility of being targeted by fraudsters still exists.
The company's findings indicated that Cairo in Egypt is currently the capital of online debit and credit card fraud in the period up to and including Valentine's Day.
