Broadband provision across Europe is to be assessed.
The European Commission is to explore the viability of making broadband universal across the continent, it has been confirmed.

As part of a new consultation set to run until the end of May, the organisation will look at the best approaches to offering basic telecoms to every European Union (EU) citizen.

Neelie Kroes, Europe's digital agenda commissioner, revealed that the process will assess whether the current competitive open market setup is sufficient to achieve this goal.

She said: "This consultation will help us to check if we need to update the rules to ensure that all EU citizens have access to essential communication services, including fast internet."

Ms Kroes added that the move is particularly crucial in the current climate of rapid technological development as it will ensure no one is "excluded from the digital society".

The news comes after Stephen Timms, minister for the 'Digital Britain' initiative, revealed recently that he is hoping to see an extra 7 million UK residents online by 2014.ADNFCR-2196-ID-19653311-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
