Turkey top for tummy-related travel claims

Tummy bugs are not uncommon in Turkey.
Travel insurance customers who plan to visit Turkey this year may want to keep their policies close at hand, as research shows that the nation accounted for the highest prevalence of gastroenteritis claims in 2009.
Research by travel insurance provider insurewithease.com found that the Eurasian country, which is known for its Ottoman architecture, dramatic landscapes and beautiful beaches, was responsible for a significant proportion of holidays being disrupted by tummy bugs.
Turkey was followed by Egypt, the Dominican Republic, Spain and the US, all of which had more than their fair share of gastroenteritis claims.
The remaining nations in the top ten for tummy bug claims were Ukraine, Bolivia, Cyprus, Israel and Equatorial Guinea.
Sarah Taylor, online marketing manager at insurewithease.com, pointed out that sudden illness can ruin a holiday.
"We encourage holidaymakers to take precautions to minimise their risk of becoming ill," she advised.
"Little things such as drinking bottled water and avoiding ice cubes can make a big difference."
However, Ms Taylor conceded that precautions cannot prevent all cases of illness and accidents, a fact that highlights the need to compare travel insurance policies before leaving the UK.
