Travel insurance buyers opt for quiet ski resorts

Quieter resorts have found favour with budget-conscious skiers.
Skiers and snowboarders are increasingly choosing to shun the overcrowded slopes of popular winter resorts and are instead opting to visit less well-known destinations, a travel insurance company has found.
According to a poll by Go Travel Insurance, traditional resorts such as Chamonix in France and Verbier in Switzerland are no longer in favour among many winter sports enthusiasts.
Instead, holidaymakers are seeking out quieter, cheaper destinations, including La Clusaz in France, Arcalis in Andorra and even the Indian resort of Gulmarg.
"For many serious snow sports enthusiasts, these resorts more than make up for their lack of facilities by offering superb skiing and snowboarding opportunities, without the crowded trails and long queues that mar the bigger resorts," a spokesman for Go Travel Insurance revealed.
The insurer also emphasised the importance of taking out travel insurance, including cover for winter sports.
In particular, this type of insurance provides medical cover so that casualties can be airlifted off the slopes and transported to a local hospital without facing hefty bills.
"Other useful components of a snow sport-specific travel insurance plan include cover for your equipment in case of theft or damage, lost luggage, and compensation in case you are unable to take to the slopes for a portion of your holiday due to adverse weather or lack of snow," the spokesman added.
Despite the importance of travel insurance, a recent survey by esure found that more than one-third of Britons would try out an extreme winter sport without first ensuring they had appropriate cover.
