Many Britons have faced travel delays in recent months.
One in seven Britons have experienced travel disruption since the start of 2010, according to new research which underlines the importance of taking out travel insurance when purchasing a holiday.

According to a Sainsbury's Travel Insurance poll of 2,005 adults conducted by ICM, one in seven British adults has been affected by problems such as ash clouds, industrial action and political unrest.

Across the UK population, this adds up to 7 million people, 800,000 of whom experienced at least seven days of delays, which could prove costly for those without travel insurance.

The research suggests that holidaymakers as a whole have lost approximately £2.1bn as a result of flight delays and cancellations.

Scott Gorman, manager of Sainsbury's Travel Insurance, advised: "If a flight is delayed or cancelled your airline should always be your first port of call to arrange an alternative or a refund, followed by your tour operator if you have one.

"However, travel insurance can offer another useful source of reimbursement for costs incurred if you shop around for policies that offer a good level of cover."

Meanwhile, Gordon Morris, managing director of Age UK Enterprises, has advised older people to compare travel insurance policies, as many find it hard to obtain appropriate cover.

He claimed: "It has never been more important for consumers to shop around to make sure they have comprehensive cover when they travel and are not paying over the odds.

"People must take time to do their research, check the small print and ensure they have the best value travel insurance policy for their individual needs."ADNFCR-2196-ID-800636175-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
