Thousands of Britons take paid sick leave in order to nurse poorly dogs or cats, a survey by pet insurance provider LV= has found.

The company commissioned an online poll of 2,036 adult pet owners in order to shed light on the trend.

Researchers estimated that 38% of British pet owners had a sick dog or cat within the past five years, or one which had died.

Of these, 18% admitted they had taken time off work to look after their pet or grieve, with around 379,000 workers calling in sick and taking paid leave.

The insurer said that businesses lose £18m each year in lost workforce hours, with each of the workers who called in sick because of a cat or dog last year taking an average of 2.4 days off.

Emma Holyer, a spokeswoman for LV= Pet Insurance, commented: "It's clearly an upsetting time when a beloved pet is sick or dying, and this report shows that many people suffer as much as they would for a friend or relative.

"This has a significant impact on employers across the UK, as staff take time off because of their pets."

Qualifications regulator Ofqual recently revealed that some teenagers are granted an extra 2% in GCSE or A-level exams to reflect the fact that their performance may have been affected by the recent death of a family pet.ADNFCR-2196-ID-19613266-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
