Third of holidaymakers 'will not buy travel cover'

All holidaymakers should consider buying travel insurance.
Many Brits are taking their chances and choosing not to buy travel insurance before they head overseas. Research suggests millions of people will go on holiday without travel cover this summer. While the decision may seem sensible in light of families' stretched finances, it could prove devastating in the event that an accident or illness requiring medical attention occurs during their trip.

8.8m will remain uninsured
More than half of people (51%) have not yet bought travel insurance for their summer holidays this year, according to new research from the Money Advice Service. While some holidaymakers will undoubtedly buy cover before they leave UK shores, the research suggests that one in three (34%) do not intend to purchase any.

Brits urged to buy cover
The Money Advice Service said that all holidaymakers - regardless of whether they are holidaying overseas or in the UK this summer - should "ensure they understand the benefits of having travel insurance and the risks of not buying it". For instance, the average cost of overseas medical treatment exceeds £2,000 - an amount that uninsured holidaymakers have to cover on their own.

Cover not just for medical care
Of course, travel cover is not just useful in cases where medical treatment is needed. Another important aspect of travel insurance is that it provides cover in the event that a person's belongings are lost or stolen.

It's easy to overlook the value of the contents of your suitcases, but recent research by Churchill Travel Insurance highlighted the significant costs involved. The insurer found that the average child has £220 worth of toys, gadgets and clothes in their luggage, with one in 10 packing more than £500 worth of possessions. Annette Fox, a spokesman for the company, advised parents to "make a list of all the items packed and their value, just in case the worst happens and you need to make a lost luggage claim".ADNFCR-2196-ID-801420448-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
