Thieves benefit from insecure garages and gardens

Britons should ensure their sporting equipment is insured.
Britons are giving thieves a helping hand by neglecting to lock their garages and secure their gardens, a specialist home insurance company has warned.
Hiscox estimates that the average householder may be leaving £770 worth of sporting equipment, including golf clubs and watersports gear, within easy reach of opportunistic criminals.
Over half of respondents to the home insurer's poll admitted that they often leave expensive kit in their gardens and car boots during the summer months.
Over a third (37%) said they did not know whether their sports equipment was covered by their insurance policy and 15% knew for a fact that their kit was not protected.
Austyn Tusler, home insurance expert at Hiscox, commented: "The value of sports equipment can really add up as people pursue outdoor activities and invest in sophisticated and expensive kit."
The expert added that householders should work out how much it would cost to replace their kit so that they know how much cover they need when they compare home insurance policies.
The Association of British Insurers recently urged homeowners to lock their doors and windows when leaving the house, as its members dealt with 1,250 claims every working day last summer.
