Students in Scotland 'fear credit card debt'

Debt worries haunt Scottish students.
More than half of students in Scotland are in commercial debt, which has built up through the use of credit cards and bank overdrafts, new research has found.

The study by the National Union of Students (NUS) also discovered that two-thirds of university attendees owe their friends and family money.

Not surprisingly, the poll found that poorer students were more likely to be worried about credit card debt than their more financially secure counterparts.

Meanwhile, more than half of students worked to pay their bills during their degrees and those in commercial debt were more likely to seek employment alongside their course.

Over eight in 10 students seeking work did so in order to support themselves financially and just 11% undertook employment to boost their skills.

Liam Burns, president of NUS Scotland, said: "Our survey has clearly shown that the government is absolutely right to be concerned about student debt."
