Student finance worries lead to Xmas work

Many students will take on paid employment this winter.
The perilous financial position of the nation's students has been laid bare by new research from studentgems.com.

According to the work experience site, 82% of students will take on a paid job this Christmas in order to make ends meet.

This includes the 16% who will work for three hours or more on Christmas Day.

Moreover, 93% of those who will work said that the jobs they planned to do were "not relevant" to their future careers.

Termtime student finances have become a more pressing issue with the onset of the recession, as many parents have suffered a drop in income due to losing their job or suffering a pay freeze.

This has made it tougher for their undergraduate offspring to make ends meet if they do not take on paid work.

Student loans also lead to longer-term financial worries, with studentgems.com claiming that the majority of present undergraduates will still be in debt by their mid-30s.

Push.co.uk, an advice website, also said recently that the average student beginning their studies this autumn will owe over £23,000 by the time they graduate.

Joanna Ward, co-founder of studentgems.com, commented: "As long as working does not [conflict with] commitments to their studies then [working] is a good thing to do as it helps prepare students for working life.

"However, working on Christmas Day and Boxing Day is a bit extreme; these days should be spent with family and friends."ADNFCR-2196-ID-19483648-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
