Two or more cards, along with local currency, needed.
Consumer group Which? has weighed in on the question of how best to use credit cards abroad.
According to the organisation, customers should not put all their eggs in one basket with their holiday payment methods and should instead carry multiple cards along with cash.
In its latest report, Which? also said that credit card customers should always make sure providers have their current contact details and make records of the firms' emergency helplines before they travel.
"Consider taking more than one card with you as well as some local currency in case you need another payment method to fall back on," the group advised.
The report comes in the wake of new credit cards data from UK payments association Apacs.
Data from the study show that plastic cards were used over 10 times a second by Brits abroad last year, equating to around 3% of total purchases.
In all, an estimated £20bn was spent in this way by debit and credit card customers over the 12-month period.
