The government has announced the creation of a new specialist cyber enforcement team as part of an effort to improve the safety of using credit cards to buy goods online.

On the back of research conducted by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) which showed that internet scams cost UK consumers £3.5bn every 12 months, the government is to invest £4.3m over the next three years to combat the threat of web-based fraud.

According to Heather Clayton, senior director at the OFT, it is hoped that the initiative will give the public greater confidence when they shop online.

"Online consumer protection is a key priority for the OFT," Ms Clayton added.

"The enforcement team will be looking at the activities of a wide range of commercial websites and taking action in cases where consumers' rights are being abused."

Scams being targeted by the cyber enforcement team include websites which lure consumers into making online credit card purchases for goods which are not delivered, and those which sell counterfeit products.

Research published by the University of Cambridge's Computer Laboratory last week suggested criminals could exploit a flaw in chip and pin technology to conduct credit card fraud.ADNFCR-2196-ID-19615730-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
