All homes will have smart meters by 2020.
Smart meters will be installed in all homes by 2020 as part of an initiative to provide consumers with cheaper energy.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change stated that the UK will be the first country in the world to introduce an overhaul of this kind.
It should ensure consumers pay the correct amount for their gas and electric as there will be no more estimated bills while people will be able to see exactly how their bill breaks down.
Mark Daeche, chief executive at First Utility, told the BBC that the firm has installed 10,000 meters in customer homes and has been able to offer more competitive rates as a result.
"Of course it is a benefit to us. We can provide lower prices as we don't have the overheads of supporting a customer with lots of customer service."
Ed Miliband, energy and climate change secretary, added that the project will impact 26 million homes and several million businesses.
