Skiing mishaps highlight need for travel insurance

Accidents on the slopes to blame for travel insurance claims.
The majority of travel insurance claims recorded by Direct Travel Insurance in March and April 2009 were linked to accidents on ski slopes, new figures show.
Data compiled by the company indicate that 79% of claims during the two-month period were fuelled by accidents, some of which resulted in the need for helicopter rescue and repatriation.
Meanwhile, just 12% of claims were for lost or damaged luggage; 7% for lost or stolen skiing and snowboarding equipment; and 2% for the cancellation of holidays.
Winter sports enthusiasts should take out the best travel insurance they can find in order to protect themselves against cancellation, loss of possessions or money and scheduled airline failure, the company said.
Paul Thilo, the insurer's vice-president of consumer marketing, commented: "Being able to ski or snowboard so late in the year is fantastic fun for all the family.
"Even our most basic winter sports cover includes [a] 24-hour medical emergency, search and mountain rescue service, which is useful to know when the figures show that most claims are linked to accidents on the slopes."
A recent survey by insurer More Than found that around one in four British skiers head to the pistes with more than twice the legal drink-drive level of alcohol in their blood.
