Brits can now access their credit report via an app.
If your excuse for not checking your credit report on a regular basis is that you can never find the time, a new smartphone app could be just the thing to help you access your records. Credit reference agency Equifax has launched a mobile app that promises to give customers full access to their credit data without sitting down at their computer. The service is bound to appeal to those with busy lifestyles as it means they can check their credit report whenever they have a few spare minutes, regardless of where they are.
Mobile app provides full access to data It's important to keep a close eye on your credit report, both to ensure there are no errors on your record and to spot any signs of fraudulent activity on your accounts. But for many of us it's simply another job to add to our never-ending to-do lists.
Equifax's new smartphone app - available for both iPhone and Android devices - could solve the problem. The free app, which is bound to be replicated by other credit reference agencies in the near future, allows you to log in and view your credit data via your smartphone, meaning you don't even need to find the time to sit down at your computer.
Info could help with credit applications If you're in the process of comparing credit cards or shopping around for a personal loan, the app could prove particularly handy. It's important to know how potential lenders will view your financial management, which they get an idea of by looking at your credit data. So you should always take a look at your credit report before applying for new credit.
Neil Munroe, external affairs director at Equifax, observed: "More and more consumers are using smartphones to access a variety of products and services so it makes complete sense for them to be able access their credit data that way too."
App may provide head-start against fraudsters Mr Munroe also believes the new app could help consumers to combat ID fraud. He explained: "As soon as they receive an SMS alert from us that information on their credit report has changed, they can use the app to check the details. There's no need to find a PC to log on. And if there is a search or credit agreement they didn't authorise, they can immediately contact the organisation that registered it with us to flag up the potential of ID fraud."
