According to RIAS, an insurer which specialises in insurance for over 50s, drivers that try to save money during the credit crunch by opting not to buy car insurance are “cost-cutting to a foolhardy extreme”.
The insurer reminded motorists that as well as being against the law in the UK, those found to be driving without insurance could end up with a criminal record.
It also raised awareness of how the Motor Insurers Bureau last year found that uninsured drivers cost law-abiding motorist more than £500m every year, or £30 extra on every premium.
Additionally, the insurer pointed out that during 2007, more than 150,000 vehicles were seized by the police for not having insurance – this is equivalent to one vehicle every three minutes.
Janet Connor, managing director at RIAS, said: “There is no question that driving without insurance is both unlawful and ill-advised.
“If you are worried about the cost of insurance, it is worth talking to your insurance provider to check whether there are any savings to be made. We advise customers to ask about discounts and flexible payment plans,” she added.
RIAS highlighted how car insurance dodgers were less likely to get away with their crime these days because of the improvement of number plate recognition technology and better relationships between the police and insurance companies.
