Scrapping the 50p broadband tax could hurt rural households.
Rural households could miss out on superfast broadband if government plans to introduce a 50p per month tax on landlines are scrapped, a research firm has warned.

Tim Johnson, chief analyst at Point Topic, highlighted the importance of extending superfast broadband throughout the UK.

"All the main parties agree that Britain needs superfast broadband. Where they differ is about how to deliver it to the rest of the country," he told the BBC.

"With Britain struggling to emerge from recession, I believe the benefits from extending and speeding the spread of superband could make it one of the government's best choices for investment."

A survey of 561 people, published on March 1st by ISPreview.co.uk, found that the majority of Britons do not support the government's proposed 50p broadband tax.

Prime minister Gordon Brown says the extra revenue would be used to pay for the roll-out of superfast broadband across the country, but the Conservatives have distanced themselves from the proposal. ADNFCR-2196-ID-19677141-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
