Pet insurance premiums are on the rise.
Many households have decided not to renew their pet insurance policies amid rapidly rising costs, insurers have revealed.

The cost of taking out pet insurance has soared by 28% in the space of two years and some owners are finding that their annual premium has been hiked when they come to renew.

While a quick pet insurance comparison in 2007 was likely to uncover premiums in the region of £162, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said that the average premium in 2009 stood at £208.

Kate Carr, a spokeswoman for the ABI, told the Daily Mail: "Most pet lovers want to ensure their animals get the best veterinary care possible.

"But advances in veterinary care come at a cost and this is reflected in the rising cost of premiums."

However, a veterinary surgeon at charity PDSA emphasised the importance of pet insurance.

Sean Wensley pointed out: "The average cost of treating a pet involved in a road traffic accident is approximately £850, though this could be significantly more depending on the injuries sustained."

A recent study by Esure Pet Insurance found that whippets are the costliest dogs over the course of their lifetime, with the average whippet owner spending more than £4,630 on food, vet bills, kennel visits, grooming, treats and pet insurance offers each year.ADNFCR-2196-ID-800036854-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
