Report sheds light on mobile broadband coverage

The Scottish Highlands have particularly poor 3G broadband coverage.
A new report has provided a snapshot of the UK's mobile broadband coverage, including the availability of both 2G and 3G networks.
According to Ofcom's first report on the UK's communications infrastructure, 97% of premises are now able to receive a 2G signal outdoors from all four 2G networks: Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and O2.
However, geographic coverage is significantly lower at 66%, as mobile broadband providers tend to focus their attentions on areas with the greatest densities of households and businesses.
The report also shows that 73% of UK premises can receive a signal outdoors from all five 3G networks, which consist of Three, in addition to the four operators mentioned previously.
However, 7.7m UK premises still do not have access to all five 3G mobile networks.
Ofcom's research shows that the Scottish Highlands and mid-Wales have the lowest 3G coverage.
In addition, the report reveals that UK consumers, including those who compare broadband deals, typically use around 17 Gigabytes of fixed broadband data and 0.24 Gigabytes of mobile broadband data per month.
Steve Unger, Ofcom's chief technology officer, said: "This is our first report to the government on the UK's communications infrastructure.
"We hope it will be a useful reference point for interested parties, particularly in the light of the recent government funding package of £150m to help address mobile not-spots."
