Three-quarters of skiers are looking to reduce the cost of their winter holidays and could benefit from using a prepaid travel card, new research suggests.

Sainsbury's Finance commissioned a poll of 2,024 adults, conducted by research firm ICM, which found that just 20% of skiers and snowboarders plan to go away this winter.

Of those who are still planning a winter break, 73% said they hope to reduce the cost of their holiday.

For instance, 28% said they would be shunning mountain restaurants in favour of packed lunches, while 26% will stay in cheaper accommodation than usual.

One in five respondents also revealed that their choice of destination will be based on the local cost of living and the exchange rate.

David Barrett, a spokesman for Sainsbury's Travel Money, said: "Skiing is an expensive sport and in a time of financial uncertainty it seems that many enthusiasts are being forced to either forgo their holiday or try to find ways of reducing the cost of their trip.

"Looking beyond the traditional ski destinations can provide a way of saving significant sums on a ski holiday."

Britons who want to reduce the cost of their holiday could benefit from taking out a prepaid travel card, such as the Sainsbury's Cash Passport, which does not charge for overseas ATM withdrawals.

Cardholders can load money on to their prepaid credit card in one of six different foreign currencies, with the exchange rate being fixed at the time of loading.

Other prepaid travel cards include the my Travel Cash Euro Prepaid MasterCard and the Escape Travel Prepaid Card.ADNFCR-2196-ID-801239265-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
