Botched DIY jobs could put home insurance at risk.
Britons have been urged to seek professional help for complex home improvements, as they could reduce the value of their property and invalidate their home insurance.

Research by LV= suggests that over 4 million homeowners have taken on electrical jobs over the past few years, with 1.35 million attempting major structural work.

The insurer pointed out that poor DIY work could actually reduce the value of a property, as well as putting the owner's home insurance policy in jeopardy.

John O'Roarke, managing director of LV= home insurance, revealed: "Although nine out of 10 people in our survey (88%) recognised that jobs like gas work should only be left to the professionals, nearly 0.5 million Brits are still prepared to give it a go.

"Not only could bungling these jobs be dangerous and costly to put right, but if they caused a serious problem with the property it could invalidate the home insurance cover."

The warning follows recent advice from M&S Money, which urged householders to ensure their home insurance policy provides cover for accidental damage before embarking upon DIY projects.ADNFCR-2196-ID-19764022-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
