Political parties 'must commit to fast broadband'

Experts have urged MPs to commit to universal fast broadband.
The government and opposition parties need to change their attitude towards the delivery of high-speed broadband throughout the UK, an organisation has said.
The CMA, which is part of the British Computer Society, believes that the roll-out of universal broadband is vital if the economy is to flourish and the nation to be helped out of recession.
Experts at the organisation are concerned that neither the Conservatives' nor Labour's plans to provide universal coverage will be achieved quickly or comprehensively enough.
They have therefore called for a "clear commitment from all main political parties" that affordable, high-speed broadband will be available to all before 2017.
Furthermore, the CMA wants local authorities to be encouraged to invest in web-based services, such as by favouring business plans that include an online proposition.
Chair Carolyn Kimber commented: "Talking about £150m to £200m of investment a year rolling out broadband to the un-served areas is not going to create the flourishing online economy which we at CMA know is the economic future of the UK.
"CMA believes that it is necessary to stimulate the environment a long time before 2017. The current drip-drip approach is not working."
The Conservative Party recently pledged to provide the "majority" of the UK with super-fast broadband within the next seven years.
