Pet insurer predicts seasonal rise in advice calls
16 June 2010 15:05:13
Summer can be a hazardous time for pets.
Veterinary nurses at M&S Pet Insurance are anticipating an increase in the number of calls from owners with sick or injured pets.
Summer tends to be one of the busiest times for the insurer's Vetfone advice line, which provides guidance for pet owners outside of normal veterinary hours.
This is because the warm weather brings with it a host of hazards for dogs and cats, according to Clare Scantlebury, deputy operations manager of Vetfone.
She commented: "It's lovely for pets and their owners to enjoy being out and about during the summer, but they need to be aware of hidden dangers which, although rare, do cause real problems."
Ms Scantlebury cited a number of cases in which pets have needed veterinary attention during the summer months.
These included a dog which sustained severe injuries to her teeth after running into a washing line with a frisbee in her mouth, as well as a spaniel which became ill after eating fallen walnuts in the garden.
The insurer recently advised owners to keep an eye out for signs of skin and flea allergies, which tend to be more problematic for pets during warm weather.
