Pets are often more important than dates.
The majority of people with dogs or cats would cancel a date if their furry friend was ill, according to a new survey by M&S Pet Insurance.
Research conducted by the insurer discovered that 52% of respondents would always choose their pet over their partner in the event of unexpected illness.
Just 26% of men would put their relationship first, underlining the strength of the love many people have for their pets.
David Wells, head of insurance at M&S, admitted that he was not surprised by the findings, as Britain is known to be a nation of pet lovers.
"Pet owners often have a close bond with their animals as they are often a predictable presence in our ever-changing lives, providing unconditional love, emotional support and companionship," he pointed out.
"Therefore, when a new partner comes along it is not surprising that they need to love the pet as much as the person."
While many people would put their relationship at risk for the sake of a poorly pet, a recent survey by LV= revealed that a significant proportion of Britons would also risk the wrath of their bosses.
The pet insurance provider found that 11% of owners have stayed at home to nurse a sick pet, while a similar proportion have taken time off to grieve for a deceased dog or cat.
