Road grit can get stuck in dogs' paws.
Freezing weather conditions can put animals at serious risk of ill-health or injury unless owners take steps to protect them, a pet insurance firm has warned.
Ben Jones, vet of the year at insurer Petplan, said that being aware of the potential dangers can help to prevent health problems.
Even small things can cause complications for pets, such as grit from roads getting stuck in their paws.
"If the pavements are gritted, check your dog's paws to make sure they aren't starting to hurt," Mr Jones commented.
"Grit can be extremely irritating to footpads, even drying them to a point where paws split open and bleed."
The vet also advised owners to stop their pet from licking road salt from their paws and fur, as this can cause stomach problems.
Meanwhile, owners who do not feel safe taking their pets outdoors in icy or snowy weather should make sure their furry friends have plenty to keep them occupied indoors.
Mr Jones suggested keeping a range of toys in the house to maintain a certain level of physical activity, as well as extra warm bedding to ensure pets are comfortable during the night.
The RSPCA recently warned dog owners to keep their pets away from frozen ponds, as thin ice could easily break under a dog's weight.
