Pet insurance customers warned of window danger
Pet insurance customers warned of window danger
08 July 2010 10:27:26
Open windows could pose a risk to cats.
The Blue Cross has advised cat owners to keep an eye on open windows if they live high up in buildings.
Warmer weather has led householders to keep as many windows as possible open during the day and night, but the animal charity is concerned that the practice could put pets at risk.
It revealed that it had recently treated three cats which had injured themselves after falling from open windows or balconies which were five or six storeys high.
Such incidents could lead to avoidable pet insurance claims or sizeable vet bills in the absence of appropriate cover.
For instance, one of the cats fractured a foreleg which had to be operated on, while another dislocated a hip and fractured a thigh bone.
The Blue Cross said in a statement: "If you have cats and want to have your windows open, invest in a mesh covering which will prevent them falling out.
"You can also make sure the window is open a tiny bit on a restrictor so the cat can't push it open, but remember that cats can fit through very small gaps."
The charity also advises cat owners to put out plenty of fresh drinking water during the summer months, as old cats in particular are susceptible to overheating.
