Pet insurance company warns of stolen dogs

Many Britons have suffered the trauma of a lost pet.
Nearly 3 million dogs and cats have gone missing in the past five years and owners in more than a fifth of these cases believe their pet was stolen.
That is according to the latest research from Sainsbury's Pet Insurance, which frequently receives claims from owners who need money towards the advertising costs for their lost pet.
The insurer estimates that 128,000 dogs and cats are stolen each year and more than a third of pets that disappear are never seen again.
Lucy Hunter, manager of Sainsbury's Pet Insurance, commented: "Losing a pet can be a devastating experience, but it's alarming to see that many people do not follow the simple steps most likely to result in their safe return.
"The vast majority of those surveyed did not contact the police, place an advert in the local paper or put up posters in the neighbourhood, which significantly decreases their chances of being reunited with their pet."
Veterinary charity PDSA advises owners to get their pets microchipped, as this ensures lost pets can be correctly identified and reunited with their families.
