Pensioners to get gas and electric bill rebate

Poorest pensioners to benefit from gas and electric rebate.
The government has announced a rebate on gas and electric bills for the poorest pensioners.
An initiative involving the nation's big six energy suppliers, British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, npower, Scottish Power and Scottish and Southern Energy, will see many pensioners receive an £80 rebate, starting in May or June.
It is estimated that up to 250,000 of the poorest households will benefit from the scheme, which was announced today (March 12th) by work and pensions secretary Yvette Cooper and energy secretary Ed Miliband.
The rebate will be available to households where at least one person is over the age of 70 and is receiving the guarantee credit element of pension credit.
"This breakthrough should provide cut-price energy this year to those poorest and most vulnerable pensioners struggling with bills," said Mr Miliband.
"It will also test how future energy bill rebates could reach those most in need of help."
Jonathan Stearn, an energy expert at Consumer Focus, told the Guardian that the rebate would help the poorest customers.
"This is a very welcome move and needs to be developed to help all low-income consumers struggling to make ends meet," he added.
