Overseas drivers urged to buy breakdown cover

Britons who plan to avoid the volcanic ash disruption by driving to Europe this summer have been advised to take out breakdown cover before leaving home.

Nearly three in 10 respondents to an RAC survey said that they planned to shun air travel this year.

Many are likely to hit the roads instead and could be in for a nasty surprise if their vehicle fails overseas.

This is because the average cost for transporting a broken-down car back to the UK is at least £1,000, according to RAC European Breakdown data collected in 2009.

Director of operations Neil Thompson said that driving has many benefits for holidaymakers, as they have more control over their journey and can take as much luggage as they can fit into their car.

However, he warned: "Just as current flights are being stalled by unforeseen events such as volcanic ash, it's worth motorists protecting themselves from the additional cost and stress of breaking down abroad.

"Arranging cover before they leave and getting to grips with what they're covered for is essential too."

Motorists who want to cross to France can choose between boarding a ferry, taking a hovercraft or using the Eurotunnel train shuttle, which takes about 35 minutes.ADNFCR-2196-ID-19789339-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
