About one in four households in the UK have no home contents insurance, while one-third do not have any buildings cover, new research shows.

Thousands of uninsured people are burgled each year and research by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks indicates that the average cost of repairing damage and replacing belongings is £1,260.

Figures suggest that over 6m households would have to foot the cost of a burglary themselves and the banks' analysis shows that the overall annual bill almost reaches £200m.

Steve Reid, retail director at Clydesdale Bank, commented: "It makes sense to take precautions to prevent burglaries from happening in the first place. But security measures are not fool-proof and you can still fall victim to a determined burglar.

"Adequate home contents insurance can't stop the crime from happening, but it can ease the burden should the worst happen."

Meanwhile, insurance retailer Swinton has warned that millions of people across the UK could invalidate their home insurance this summer by leaving windows and doors open when they leave the house.

Insurer development manager Steve Chelton warned that homeowners who fail to secure their property could be left "severely out of pocket" in the event of a burglary.ADNFCR-2196-ID-19798791-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
