New credit card laws 'should just be the start'
17 March 2010 15:37:27
Credit card rule changes welcomed by Citizens Advice.
The new changes to the credit card industry should only be the start of the government's attempts to protect under-pressure consumers, it has been suggested.
Earlier this week, five new measures relating to allocation of payments and credit limit increases were confirmed following a consultation by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
However, Citizens Advice explained that further efforts are required, as credit cards play a "major part" in the debt problems accumulated by the charity network's clients.
Director of policy Teresa Percherd said: "A lot of work remains to be done to make sure people who engage with their creditors, get advice and pay what they can afford are protected from harsh and aggressive debt collection and enforcement.
"We welcome the opportunity to work with government and the credit industry to improve communications with borrowers and to ensure they get a fair deal."
Ms Percherd added that the government should also introduce a rule which would force credit card providers to obtain the consent of their consumers for credit limit increases.
Citizens Advice was launched on September 3rd 1939 as an emergency service during the second world war and 200 bureaux were opened on the following day.
