Almost half of people have not heard of smart meters.
The news has been littered with stories about smart meters in recent months - yet most people still do not really know what they are or, more importantly, what the devices will mean for them. To overcome this problem, Consumer Focus has launched a new advice guide that should help to take the mystery out of smart meters.

Half of Brits know nothing about smart meters
Research by Consumer Focus suggests that 48% of Britons have never even heard of smart meters, despite the government's plans to roll them out across the nation in less than two years. In fact, half a million new smart meters have already been installed in people's homes, with all properties expected to have the technology by the end of 2019.

Meters could provide benefits
Smart meters are being hailed as the future of gas and electricity metering as they provide a range of additional functions that are not present on old-style devices. In particular, they will remove the need for suppliers to perform manual meter readings, as the necessary information can be sent automatically.

Experts say they could also help consumers to reduce their gas and electric bills, as they provide information on individuals' consumption. But they're by no means a 'magic bullet', as effort is still needed on the householder's part to cut back on energy usage.

Guide should answer key questions
The new Consumer Focus guide should provide all the information householders need to understand smart meters ahead of their wider roll-out. Zoe McLeod, head of smart and sustainable energy markets at the campaign group, said: "As with any new technology there are potential benefits such as accurate bills and opportunities to help you save money on your energy bills, but also new issues that customers should be aware of.

"Our simple guide answers many of the questions you may want to know - what you can expect to get from your supplier, your rights, and the pros and cons of getting one of these meters early."ADNFCR-2196-ID-801375588-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
