Music download fans urged to check home insurance
17 August 2010 15:45:33
Home insurance policies do not always cover music downloads.
Music fans who download tracks on to their computers should check their home insurance policies to ensure their purchases are covered, an insurer has said.
Virgin Money explained that uninsured consumers could lose their music collection and have no way of getting their money back in the event that they lose or damage their computer.
Britons should compare home insurance policies carefully, as not all providers pay out for downloaded tracks.
Some insurers do not cover downloaded tracks as they regard them as data files, while others count the tracks as personal possessions and provide policyholders with the necessary cover.
Grant Bather, a spokesman for Virgin Money, said: "While people may think to include their CDs in their insurance policies, downloaded files are often ignored.
"If your computer or laptop is lost, stolen or damaged, a lot of information and film and music downloads could be lost at considerable expense unless you have download cover."
HMV recently launched a revamped music download service, HMV Digital, in a bid to compete with Apple's iTunes service.
