A celebrity lawyer known for using small details to get clients out of sticky situations has found himself £5,000 worse off after failing to read the terms and conditions on his pet insurance policy.

Nick Freeman, also known as 'Mr Loophole', was holidaying in the south of France when his pet Staffordshire bull terrier Rocco collapsed.

The dog required expensive tests and two blood transfusions after picking up a potentially fatal parasitic infection.

However, when Mr Freeman came to claim the private vet's fees back from his pet insurance company, he realised he had failed to read the small print properly.

In fact, he should have given the insurer two weeks' notice before taking his pet out of the UK and should also have paid an extra £100 for overseas cover.

"I have to hold my hands up. I didn't read the small print but I should have done," Mr Freeman admitted.

"Dog owners can learn from me that you must read the terms and deal with them when they take their pets away."

Owners can gain a range of benefits from their pet insurance, including cover for unexpected veterinary fees and third party liability cover.

In addition, those who compare pet insurance offers thoroughly will find policies that pay out for advertising costs for lost pets and in the event of the animal's death from injury or illness.ADNFCR-2196-ID-800038843-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
