MPs criticise protection against online fraudsters

Consumers lose £7bn to online fraudsters and dodgy traders.
The arrangements for protecting consumers against online fraudsters and sellers of defective goods are "incoherent and fragmented", an influential committee of MPs has said.
The Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has published a new report on consumer protection, which suggests that bank account customers and other consumers lose £7bn a year at the hands of rogue traders and online fraudsters.
PAC chair Margaret Hodge said that the existing enforcement system for dealing with regional or nationwide cases "has not kept pace with the rise of mass market scams, often perpetrated online".
Consumers who check their bank accounts online or regularly make purchases via the internet should always be on their guard against criminal activity.
Internet users are advised to check their bank statements regularly for unfamiliar transactions and log out properly at the end of their session.
It is also important not to respond to any emails or phone calls that appear to be from the user's bank and that ask for security information.
