| Keys are to blame for many emergency call-outs. |
The image people normally have in their mind when they think of breakdown patrolmen is of them peering into the open bonnet of a car or loading an unfortunate vehicle onto a flatbed truck.
However, breakdown cover firm Green Flag has revealed that many of its call-outs relate to incidents with car keys.
Over 20,000 motorists received assistance from a Green Flag employee after suffering a key-related incident in 2009, the company revealed.
The most common call-outs were to drivers who had locked their keys in the car, according to Dan Robinson, head of Green Flag.
"Locking keys in the car is not only frustrating, it can be dangerous too. Young children can often find themselves inside the car with parents or guardians looking in, hoping they don't nudge the handbrake or get hurt," Mr Robinson revealed.
"We prioritise any calls where children are at risk and our highly skilled technicians are able to get into a car within a matter of minutes," he added.
Other common reasons for relying on breakdown cover last year included keys jammed in locks and lost, broken or stolen keys.
Another national breakdown cover provider, GEM Motoring Assist, recently highlighted the safety issues caused by potholes, which are also a major factor behind emergency call-outs.
