Most drivers 'never check oil', survey finds
11 February 2010 10:18:14
Many drivers do not know how to check their oil.
The majority of drivers do not carry out routine vehicle maintenance, meaning that they are more likely to rely on their breakdown cover.
Car insurance provider Swinton conducted an online survey of 1,300 drivers, which revealed that 70% of drivers have never checked the oil levels of their cars.
Men are more likely to check their oil than women, 85% of whom admitted that they had never carried out this simple but essential task.
A number of reasons were given for not checking oil, with 'not knowing how' proving to be the most common excuse.
Meanwhile, 17% of respondents said someone else did it for them; 14% did not think it needed doing; 11% did not know what type of oil to use; and 9% explained that they always wait until their annual service.
Steve Chelton, insurer development manager at Swinton car insurance, commented: "We'd advise all motorists to have a thorough understanding of car maintenance and be able to carry out simple procedures such as checking oil and topping up with water.
"The older a car gets the faster it consumes oil, so we'd advise people to check their oil level at least every two weeks and carry a spare canister in the car at all times."
Drivers who are unsure of how to check their oil should consult their vehicle's manual, which provides details on the type of oil to use and how often the oil filter should be changed.
