Minister stresses importance of holiday protection

Holidaymakers should remember the importance of travel insurance.
Holidaymakers planning a last-minute summer break should remember to ensure they have sufficient cover, the government has said.
The Department for Transport is currently reviewing the ATOL holiday protection scheme to ensure it meets the needs of today's holidaymakers.
Aviation minister Theresa Villiers confirmed that the government is taking the need to update the scheme "very seriously", as holidaymakers are often unsure about whether and how their trips are covered.
"While the vast majority of holidays pass without any problems, we have recently seen the anxiety and difficulty the failure of a travel operator can cause," she observed.
"We are working right now on what can be done to make the scheme better suited to today's holiday industry and improve the clarity of the scheme so passengers are fully aware of whether they're covered or not."
Ms Villiers added that, in the meantime, Britons should do their homework before booking their holiday.
For instance, travellers whose holidays are not covered by the ATOL scheme should perform a travel insurance comparison and consider booking with a credit card.
This is because Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act entitles cardholders to a refund from their providers on purchases worth between £100 and £30,000 if the travel firm they have booked with collapses.
