Most people would support mandatory testing for older drivers. || Older car insurance customers should be forced to take a driving test when they reach 70, most people believe.
The majority of people think that older drivers should be re-tested to ensure they are safe on the road, a survey shows.
Research conducted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) found that 68% of people would support mandatory re-testing for over-70s, while 73% would report elderly car insurance policyholders to the authorities if they had concerns over their driving abilities.
However, Neil Greig, the institute's director of policy and research, insisted that older drivers do not represent a disproportionate risk.
He revealed: "8% of drivers are over 70 and they are involved in around 4% of injury crashes."
In contrast, Mr Greig said that drivers in their teens and 20s are involved in 34% of injury crashes, despite accounting for just 15% of motorists.
The director expressed concern at the widespread support for a mandatory re-test at 70 years of age, warning that such a move would be a "mammoth" administrative task.
Many people rely on their cars to remain independent, but Age Concern and Help the Aged advises older drivers to declare any conditions that may impair their ability to drive safely, including problems relating to vision, blood pressure and the cardiovascular system.
