Londoners on low incomes could soon have access to cheap contents insurance, under a new campaign being launched by the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
According to figures from the group, 750,000 people in the capital live in social or council housing.
Statistically, this group is twice as likely to be burgled and a third more likely to be the victim of an arson attack than others, but are also the least likely to have any form of insurance.
ABI officials, along with insurer Aviva and broker Aon, met with London councils and housing associations this week to create more insurance options for tenants.
Nick Starling, ABI director of general insurance and health, commented that many Londoners are unable to access insurance, which "makes it difficult for them to plan for the future, and leaves them at the mercy of unwelcome events, such as burglary".
He added: "Helping landlords provide tenants insurance will ensure that many unprotected and vulnerable Londoners have the financial protection they need."
