Londoners wasting money on gas and electric bills

London homes tend to be the least energy-efficient.
People in London are spending more than necessary on their gas and electric bills, new research suggests.
A survey commissioned by environment charity Groundwork revealed that Londoners' homes are the least efficient in England, meaning that people living in the capital use more energy to stay warm.
The poll, which was conducted by Ipsos MORI, questioned 1,009 people across the nation and found that 31% of Londoners had no loft insulation, compared with just 3% of people in the east Midlands.
However, many of the capital's residents revealed that they would consider improving their properties if they were given advice by a local expert.
For instance, 27% of respondents without cavity wall insulation from the London area and 28% without loft insulation said they would be more likely to take action if they received personal advice.
Tony Hawkhead, chief executive of Groundwork, claimed: "What we need is a network of experienced advisors, skilled in providing support to communities, to help them navigate the red tape and paperwork.
"The recent freezing weather means people's fuel bills will be on the rise, for some to unmanageable levels, so it's more important than ever to insulate our homes and save heat and money."
Meanwhile, Reigate and Banstead Borough Council in Surrey has revealed that it is using heat-seeking vehicles to show where heat is escaping from buildings.
The vehicles are capable of assessing up to 1,000 homes per hour and will be used to identify properties which could benefit from improved insulation.
