Lighting competition for gas and electric firms
27 January 2010 09:58:27
Gas and electric firms challenged to make energy-efficient lighting.
Household gas and electric bills could be reduced if a new energy efficiency project launched by the government proves successful.
The 'Small Business Research Initiative' (SBRI) competition has been designed to encourage UK companies to become market leaders in ultra energy-efficient lighting for homes.
Firms will receive £40,000 to conduct feasibility studies, with the strongest participants handed up to £450,000 from a £1.2m research fund to develop their technologies.
"This competition aims to develop a capability within the UK for the supply of ultra efficient lamp technology, which can provide lighting for the home that is of high quality with exceptional efficiency and long lifetimes," said Mark Glover, head of the SBRI.
Mr Glover added that the initiative will further enhance the green attributes of Britain's homes, which were once characterised by "Victorian incandescence".
The first phase of the competition, which is being organised by the Technology Strategy Board and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, opens on February 22nd.
