Internet use 'may lead to home insurance claims'

Information posted on social networking sites could prove costly.
Internet users who regularly visit social networking sites should be cautious about the information they make available to others, as a lack of prudence could lead to avoidable home insurance claims.
Nikki Sellers, head of home insurance at esure, made the recommendation after the insurer conducted a survey into people's internet and mobile phone habits.
"When it comes to digital behaviour, users of social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo should remember to be careful when posting information online - particularly about parties or celebrations," Ms Sellers advised.
"There have been several recent instances of small gatherings being gate-crashed by unwanted guests and properties subsequently damaged at substantial cost to the homeowners."
The wisdom of Ms Sellers' advice for internet users was underlined by a recent case in which a house on Merseyside incurred serious damage after a party advertised on Facebook attracted more than 50 revellers.
Drunk party-goers caused around £15,000 worth of damage to the property after the family's 15-year-old daughter attempted to organise a small get-together in her parents' absence.
